Culture Briefs – Culture – The Washington Times, America’s Newspaper:
“It didn’t work. One of the many dynamics in play this fall was the phenomenon of ‘Bushenfreude,’ angry, well-off, well-educated yuppies, generally clustered on the coasts, who were funneling windfalls from Bush tax cuts into the campaigns of Democrats and preparing to vote for those who would raise taxes on their capital gains, their incomes, and their estates.
Ever since that Avenue Q song Schadenfreude I’ve been obessed with the use and the misuse of the word. So what does ‘Bushenfreude’ mean? I would suggest that it mean joy obtained from the misfortunes of Bush. So not winning the election created a feeling of Bushenfreude among liberals. The feeling itself is not enough to cause someone not to vote Republican. So when Bush chokes on a pretzel, people in general have a feeling of “Bushenfreude”. It is the same feeling some people feel after hearing one of those dumb criminal stories. The more I write ‘Bushenfreude’ the more I realize that it is one of those 5 minutes ago words never to be included in the dictionary among words like Bling-Bling and Phishing. Let me try “freude”-izing some people.
- Kershenfreude for John Kerry (Doesn’t Work)
- Clintonshenfreude (Doesn’t Work)
- Melmanshenfreude (Resigned Who Cares)
- Rovenfreude for Karl Rove (Could Work)
- Dobsenfreude James Dobson(Could Work)
- Billsenfreude for Bill O’Reilly (Nope)
- Chenshenfreude for Dick Cheney (Tongue Twister)
- Falwellshenfreude for Jerry Falwell (Sounds Dirty)
Only people with plenty of misfortunes should get their own “freude”. Bush qualifies but he only has two years left any way. What else could he fail at in that time? Fall off a bike? Make fun of blind people? Misspeak? Try to open a locked door? Is the worst left to come?
